Mid-Shore Exteriors Installs Free Roof for Mabel Payne of Federalsburg
The entire team at Mid-Shore Exteriors is extremely proud to announce the winner of the 2021 Free Roof Giveaway: Mabel Payne of Federalsburg! We were thrilled to be able to install a brand new GAF shingle roof, which comes with an industry-leading 50-year manufacturer’s warranty. After hearing her story from members of the community, it was our privilege to be able to provide this wonderful woman with a brand new roof during her time of need.
While we had more than 50 deserving nominees to select from, we chose Mabel after hearing about her life and what she means to the community. She is someone who has spent her life giving to the Eastern Shore community, and during her hour of needed, we felt compelled to give back to her.
“Once again, we want to thank everyone who took the time to tell us about themselves or their friends and neighbors,” Sarah Faulkner, owner of Mid-Shore Exteriors, said. “While there were so many deserving nominees we could have picked, when we heard Mabel’s story, we knew she was the one.”
Mabel’s Story
While there were so many exceptional people who entered the 2021 Free Roof Giveaway, Mabel represented the exact type of person we had in mind when envisioning our giveaway. Her roof had been leaking badly for a long time and she was forced to repeatedly (and temporarily) patch it up. However, as a 90-year-old woman living off social security, she didn’t have the funds to pay for the high-quality new roof her home so desperately needed.
Mabel spent her life operating a beloved day care center out of her home – and was known as “MomMom” because she treated everyone as her own children. Mabel had touched so many lives that we received countless submissions about her, each with a different story of her compassion and generosity. She made special meals for the children she watched and celebrated holidays and birthdays with them. Even though she never had a lot for herself, she once bought the family of children she watched a new washing machine, so the kids could have clean clothes to wear!
As someone who has given so much and shown so much love in her lifetime, Mabel truly was the perfect person to choose!

After the year of 2020, which was challenging for so many, we felt an even greater drive to once again host a roof giveaway for our community. Our goal is always to touch the life of one of our community members in a meaningful way. With Mabel, we felt honored to serve someone who had given so much to so many others.
None of this would have been possible without our partners GAF and Superior Distribution, who provided the material to build Mabel’s roof – as well as many other projects throughout the year. Next year, we hope to be able to hold the third annual Free Roof Giveaway to once again invest in the Eastern Shore community that has sustained us for so long!
